World Sight Day

-There are over one billion people in the world who can’t see because they do not have the glasses they need. Furthermore 75% of people who suffer from vision loss or blindness could have prevented if detected and treated through routine eye care. These statics are very sobering and were one of the reasons I chose to become an Optometrist.
While living in Brazil, when I was 20 years old, I saw numerous individuals who had suffered vision loss because they had no way of getting the care they need. Children with eye turns or lazy eyes were not able to afford the glasses and treatment they needed. Perhaps the most memorable example was a good friend of mine named Daniel. Daniel was a 16-year-old boy who loved playing the drums. He was also a Type 1 Diabetic. Due to poor control of his diabetes he had suffered extreme vision loss. While getting to know Daniel I kept thinking that this would never have happen in the United States.
Being an optometrist in the United States I now know that I was wrong. Preventable blindness happens in our own community as well as worldwide. I also have come to realize that many people go months to even years without the glasses they need to perform well at school, work and to be able to drive safety. I feel that as Optometrist we have failed to rely the importance of preventative eye care. Through routine eye care we are able to diagnose and treat problems that can lead to vision loss, blindness and even death.
