Vision Therapy

Vision therapy is a program of in office activities individually planned by your doctor to correct vision problems. Therapy activities are determined by ongoing evidence-based research. Vision therapy can help both children and adults. Research shows that 1/10 children have a vision problem beyond the need of glasses that is severe enough to affect their performance in school.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is vision Therapy just for children?

Your vision is constantly changing, but develops the most during the first 12 years of life. Visual skills however, can be developed at any age. This is why many adults can benefit from vision therapy. It is also why many athletes choose to go through vision training to improve their visual skills and performance.

Does vision therapy help children with learning problems?

Yes! There is a strong correlation between children with vision problems and learning problems like ADHD. Many of the symptoms are the same between vision problems and learning problems. By treating the vision problem, most children are then better able to perform in school. Some children are even misdiagnosed as having a learning problem when they really have a vision problem that impacts their ability to learn.

My Child sees 20/20 can he/SHe really have a vision problem?

Yes! Dr. Tew is an example of someone who always saw 20/20 and didn’t know he had a vision problem until he was tested for one in college. After struggling for over 20 years Dr. Tew was treated and as a result, finally discovered the joy of reading!

Can a vision problem affect self-esteem?

A person with a vision problem can struggle with work, school and sports. These struggles are very real and can cause people to feel like they will never be able to meet their goals or be able to perform as well as others.

Does vision therapy strengthen eye muscles?

The purpose of vision therapy is to correctly train the visual system. Therapy improves the communication of the eyes with each other and the brain to optimize visual skills. Most vision problems are due to poor neurological communications and not because of weak muscles.

What is a developmental optometrist?

A developmental optometrist is an eye doctor who also treats functional vision problems. These doctors are trained to use lenses, prism and vision therapy to treat vision problems.

Why don't other optometrists offer vision therapy?

Vision problems that require vision therapy can easily be missed unless your eye doctor specifically tests for them. Routine eye exams do not typically incorporate these test. Patients with obvious signs and symptoms of vision problems are often referred by their optometrist to a developmental optometrist who offers vision therapy.
