Myopia Control
-Myopia control is one of the quickest advancing research areas in optometry. As more and more children become nearsighted each year it is obvious that myopia, nearsightedness, is more than just a genetic eye problem. Myopia is also an environmental problem. The more time a child spends indoors, on screens and reading up close the higher chance of becoming myopic. Not only does being myopic mean you need glasses to see far away, it also can lead to greater risk of eye disease. The good news is that new research has led to ways we can help control myopia progression.
Treatment
There are three new methods we can use to help prevent or slow the progression of myopia.
1. Myopia control soft contact lenses.
2. Myopia control eye drops used daily.
3. Orthokeratology- Hard contacts the change the shape of the eye.
Myopia Control Facts
-Family History is important: Children with one myopic parent are at 3x the risk of becoming nearsighted. Children with two myopic parents are at 8x the risk.
-Age of onset matters: The younger your child is when they first become nearsighted, the more likely they are to develop a strong prescription without using myopia control options.
-High myopic prescription increases the risk of eye disease by 42%,
-The more time a child spends outside the better. Studies have shown that those involved in sports or those that spend over an hour a day outside reduce their risk by 20-45%
