Refractive Errors
Nearsighted
Farsighted
Astigmatism
-When vision is blurry the primary cause is a refractive error. Light that enters the eyes is bent (refracted) through the cornea and the lens of the eyes. If the refracted light does not focus onto the retina then the image will be blurry. This incorrect focus of light is know as a refractive error. There are three main types of refractive errors. These errors are myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism.
Myopia
Nearsightedness occurs when light focuses at a point anterior (in front) of the retina. This most commonly occurs when the eyes grow longer then they should.
Hyperopia
Farsightedness occurs when light isn’t focused enough and ends up focusing posterior (behind) the retina. This can happen if the eye is too short or if there isn’t enough power in the cornea or lens.
Astigmatism
Astigmatism is very common and is a part of most glasses prescriptions This occurs when the focusing power of the eye is not the same for all directions. This caused two different focusing points leading to blurred images.
